We Have Simple Answers For You!

The requirements for you to become a legal practitioner (attorney or advocate) in South Africa are found in the Legal Practice Act which you can find by clicking here.

The first step is acquiring an LLB degree (Bachelor of Laws) at any university registered in South Africa. This degree should have been obtained after a course of study of not less than 4 years or a course of study of not less than 5 years if you completed a different bachelor’s degree before the  LLB. An LLB obtained in a foreign country will also be accepted if it is equivalent to a South African LLB degree as recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority.

The second step is to undergo all the practical vocational training requirements as a candidate legal practitioner. This includes community service and a legal practice management course for candidate legal practitioners.

Lastly, you need to pass a competency-based examination for candidate practitioners. If you want to be enrolled as a conveyancer or a notary, you must pass further competency-based examinations.

You may only practice as a legal practitioner if you are admitted to practice by the High Court. In order to be admitted by the High Court, you need to be either a South African citizen or permanent resident. Additionally, you need to be a fit and proper person.
